Ways of Using Your Cellphone Abroad

In this section you will learn about the numerous ways a mobile phone can be used while abroad.

The most common and simplest way of using a cellphone while traveling is called roaming. When using roaming, you keep your same phone number as you do at home and pay on the same bill at home. This however is normally the most expansive way to use a cellphone while traveling. You also do not need an unlocked phone to use your phone this way.

Another way of keeping in touch while traveling is to simply use a local mobile phone provider in the country you are visiting. This is useful if you plan on spending more than a few days in the same place and need a phone number. It has a higher one time fee (depends where you are, but around 10-20 dollars including some credit) but costs a lot less than roaming if you use your phone for more than a couple minutes. You get a new phone number which is local for that country but you need an unlocked GSM phone that works on the frequency in the countries you are visiting.

The cheapest way but least convenient way is to use Skype.

If you are visiting a remote place and there is no cell phone coverage, you will need to use a satellite phone if you require a phone. This are very expansive to rent and use, but are the only solution at times when visiting a remote location.

cellphone use from germany

i have a person that supposedly calls me from germany, almost every night, at nauseam. my incoming call screen says # 08813 or sometimes only 903, and today one of the calls came from 19597. when I get to pick up and answer, they ask me in person to return their call to a number in Germany, which is a cellphone and starts with 0049, which is the German Prefix. when my lawyer called their German cellnumber which was the number they asked me to call back to, starting with 0049, he got redirected and they picked up..

QUESTION: how is it possible I see these weird numbers on my screen when these calls come in? I am pretty sure these people are NOT at the moment in Germany, but they must have some sort of call forwarding then.?? How can I find out where they really are??

this is a serious question and there must be somebody out there who knows how german phone forwarding works,.. Thanks..

Where the wierd numbers might come from

Their are many ways a person can fake their number on a mobile phone, and they don't even have to do so on purpose.

Some of the reasons are :
-The long distance plans that are dirt cheap
-VOIP services that let you select a number
-There was for the last 2 years or so an automobile warranty scam going on in Canada and the USA where almost everyone got called. They had some way of showing a different number and different area code in their 3-4x weekly calls to my Canadian Cell.
